Bathing to save the earth

Because taking a shower shouldn’t be at the planet’s expense.

The last few years have shown many of us how integral environmentalism is — not just for the planet to thrive, but also to survive. And it involves more than individual acts; large-scale efforts by bigger actors (private companies, the government) are just as significant, if not, even more. This is why a brand like Love Beauty and Planet makes such a difference, because it shows that beauty and personal care is an environmental concern.

Love Beauty and Planet, Unilever‘s first foray into a sustainable beauty brand, is a cruelty-free and vegan company with sustainability at its core. They currently produce haircare (shampoo and conditioner) and skincare (body wash and lotion) products with an eco-conscious mindset. The scents are also excellent — the tea tree and vetiver variety is my personal favorite. The products will be readily available in the market (you can even buy them online) and are actually quite affordable, considering how natural products tend to be more expensive compared to others.

Here are some of the ways that Love Beauty and Planet is creating products with the earth in mind:

They use 100 percent recycled bottles.

That’s why the bottles aren’t totally clear — they’re made with post-consumer recycled plastic. The bottles are also recyclable after use, and they’re currently working to make their caps recyclable as well.

Their ingredients are good for the skin and the earth.

Apart from skipping the silicones, parabens, and dyes, Love Beauty and Planet’s products use natural ingredients like coconut oil and murumuru butter. They’re all-vegan, and cruelty-free.

The conditioners use a fast-rinse technology.

We all know conditioners use up so much water to rinse. Love Beauty and Planet’s conditioners use a fast-rinse technology, letting you go easy with rinsing. Imagine if everyone saved that much water on a daily basis?

Their ingredients are ethically sourced.

Love Beauty and Planet uses scents like French heirloom lavender and Moroccan mimosa flowers in their products. And while they ensure that these fragrances are top notch, they’re also conscious of how they cultivate these ingredients. They make sure that these extracts are sourced responsibly.

They’re open about their carbon footprint.

The company will be publishing their annual carbon emissions from the production and distribution their products. Best part is, they’ll also be reducing that carbon footprint by 20 percent by 2020.
