Curtains raised for Interior Design Week

Siklab: Blazing Horizons aims to commemorate Interior Design Week by providing a broader knowledge and deeper understanding of the discipline through a series of live talks featuring key industry experts and ongoing award-winning exhibitions.

The lecture series, organized by De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, begins on May 25 with rendering artist, interior designer, and serial entrepreneur Ivy Almario as she discusses the ins and outs of the Philippine interior design industry while ruminating the secrets to a great design.

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Industrial Design professor Marlon Barnuevo will lecture on environmental graphic design and its implications.

Hosted by The Guild of Rising Interior Designers (GRID), the official organization of Interior Design from the college’s School of Design and Arts, the event exemplifies creativity and explores opportunities to rebuild and strengthen connections for the craft’s continued advancement in the country.

First day

On May 26, Bond Design Studio Japan’s IDr. Jerlyn Antinor and freelance licensed practitioner IDr. Sharlene Lanzarrote will be providing listeners with an insightful overview of the profession fueled by years of experience in the industry. Artist-educator and Philippine Pastel Association founder Julius Legaspi will also be sharing the basics of rendering with soft pastel.

Second Day

IDr. Michael Pizarro of Michael Pizarro Interior Design will be spearheading a reflection on practicing the discipline together with Benilde Interior Design alumna Mary Montenegro, who will be delving deep into the relevance of research in the business and industry on May 27.

Pizarro was a council member of Asia Young Designer’s Awards AYDA and the executive director of exhibits and conventions of the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers, while Montenegro’ studies have a focus on post-colonialism and feminism. Their experiences and expertise will no doubt enrich their discussion so that industry professionals and newcomers alike will be able to glean meaningful insights from the experience.

Last day

Finally, the series will conclude on May 28 with Design Eight Five Two Limited co-founding partners Peter Lampard and Norman Ung as they recount their entrance in the industry as well as the role of culture and branding. WeaveManila Inc. president Ann Tagle Hernandez, meanwhile, will be sharing her insights by delving into the importance of material development. Lastly, professional life coach Trixie Esguerra, who was recognized by the Philippine Wacoal Corporation as a Women of the World, will likewise be assisting participants in understanding their strengths and weaknesses and finding positivity amid the pandemic.

Additionally, there will be a line-up of online galleries that will showcase approximately 300 pieces from promising and winning entries by Benilde Interior Design students who bagged the top prizes at the 2020 AYDA and the 2020 Estilo de Vida.

Siklab: Blazing Horizons will be held via Zoom from Monday, May 24 to Friday, May 28, 2021 and livestreamed on GRID’s official Facebook page while the virtual exhibitions will be on view on the organization’s website
