TATAG WILCON: Breaking barriers—a call to grace, grit, and growth

As the year begins once again, there are important matters to reflect on and address. For me, a change in the calendar is not a reset, but a fresh start and an opportunity to move forward with intention. Each year, I remain deeply grateful for the chance to use my voice to empower and inspire others.

And why do I say this? Because this month of January, Wilcon Depot officially holds its annual Sales Kick-Off event—an occasion that brings Wilconians together with a shared singlemindedness of purpose, renewed energy, and a clear vision for the year ahead. It is a reminder of the power of leadership, collaboration, and belief in what we can achieve together.

For five intense days in January, we rallied behind Wilcon’s clarion call and theme for 2026, “TATAG WILCON: Breaking Barriers.” We were fired up knowing in our gut that this was more than an empty theme or slogan. It is our commitment to face challenges squarely, to rise above preconceived limitations, and to move forward with conviction, courage, and clarity.

Our Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Dr. William Belo, set the tone with a message that deeply resonated within all of us. He reminded us that “what defines us is not only how far we have come, but how we move forward, meeting challenges head-on, learning from every experience, and emerging stronger each time.” Survival, he said, is only the first stage. What follows is resilience—and then the courage to go beyond our limits. That message reflects the very DNA of Wilcon Depot. We do not merely endure change; we adapt, we learn, and we grow stronger because of it.

In leading the discussions throughout the Sales Kickoff, I spoke from a place of mindfulness and realism. To be matatag is not just about being “tough” in the grip of market shifts, headwinds, or external disruptions; it is also about confronting our inner struggles as leaders and individuals. We simply cannot afford to be weak inside. The demands of our roles are real, and so are the pressures that come with them. If we are to sustain excellence, we must take care of the people who make that excellence possible.

I firmly believe that effective leadership begins with a people-first approach. Business success and personal well-being are not opposing forces—they are interconnected. When our people feel supported, respected, and empowered, operations run more smoothly, decisions become more thoughtful, and performance naturally follows. As leaders, it is our responsibility to foster an environment that nurtures growth—professionally and personally—and to challenge practices that negatively impact both work and life factors.

Breaking barriers also means being honest about what no longer serves us. It requires the courage to question systems, habits, or mindsets that hinder progress, even if they are familiar. At the same time, it calls on us to build resilience not just to withstand external challenges, but to strengthen our inner resolve. Balance, empathy, and accountability are not soft ideals—they are operational imperatives in a world that continues to change rapidly.

As we move forward in 2026, I am confident in Wilcon Depot’s ability to adapt to the demands of the times. We are solid because our strength lies in our shared values, our willingness to learn, and our collective determination to go beyond mere survival. TATAG WILCON is about standing firm while remaining open to transformation. It is about breaking barriers together thoughtfully, responsibly, and with grace.
