In 2018, Parkland committed to the sole use of 100% recycled plastic bottles to create the exterior fabric on all its products.
As it continues to find ways to look good and do even better as a sustainably sound brand, this season ushers in another bold new change for the brand. Starting this Spring 2019, the classic diamond detail on Parkland’s signature backpacks will be replaced by faux leather made entirely from biodegradable apple by-product called “pellemela.” What’s more is that, all woven labels featured in all Parkland bags will now also be made with 100% recycled polyester.
A unique manufacturing process that combines apple waste, solvent, and polyurethane, pellemela is an animal-friendly 100% vegan material with properties that are similar to genuine leather. With this new step towards a higher level of sustainability, Parkland is truly setting an inspiring new standard for the industry.
Sharing the journey
It hasn’t been very long since Parkland debuted. Yet in such a short span of time, it has already made significant contributions to the sustainable cause. Much work is yet to be done but Parkland is one to celebrate victories no matter how big or small. With that said, Parkland recently held a fun and immersive event to share its colorful journey with the rest of the community.
Held last June 7 at the Uptown Mall Atrium in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, Parkland invited friends from the media and select VIP guests to the launch of “Parkland Bags From Bottles: An Experiential Exhibit”. Hosted by Alex Sy, the event kicked-off with the welcome remarks that was followed by a brief brand talk by Parkland’s Senior Brand Executive, Troy Mapoy. Soon after, Parkland officially unveiled to everyone its impressive installation, which creatively details the process of converting plastic bottles to Parkland bags!
A life-sized plastic bottle cut in half formed the 7 x 7.5 ft. tunnel structure of the exhibit. Upon stepping inside, first to greet the viewer was a floating sea of plastic bottles. The next section featured a wall filled with mesh fabric strips to mimic the process of shredding plastic bottles. The third section represented the heating process through the captivating use of colored LED lights while the fourth section featured vivid hued garters installed like linear webs to represent the threading process. Finally, the fifth section featured Parkland’s latest collection of bags as the finished product of the entire process.
Towards the end of the exhibit, a pledge wall was also mounted where attendees can freely write down and post their vows to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Amusing and indeed experiential, Parkland’s installation event speaks volume of the brand’s commitment not only to sustainability but also in introducing fresh and ingenious ways of doing things.
