SMDC brings urban farming to condo living with The Good Grow

For many city dwellers, the idea of growing food at home has long seemed out of reach. But SM Development Corporation (SMDC) is showing that urban living doesn’t have to mean leaving sustainability behind. Its recent initiative, The Good Grow, introduces residents of Vine Residences to the joys of home gardening, proving that even small spaces can cultivate meaningful green practices.

The program, held as a hands-on workshop, guided residents through planting, nurturing, and harvesting herbs and vegetables suited to condominium life. From basil and mint to leafy greens, participants learned that a few pots, the right soil, and consistent care can transform limited balcony or window space into a productive garden.

“For many people, sustainability can feel like a big concept,” said Susan G. Nicdao, Vice President and Head of the SMDC Nature Segment. “But sometimes it begins with something very simple, such as planting herbs in your own home, cooking with something you’ve grown yourself, or sharing seedlings with a neighbor. Those small acts make sustainability real and personal.”

Residents of Vine Residences engage in a hands-on learning session during The Good Grow workshop, as facilitators demonstrate the fundamentals of urban farming and how edible plants can thrive in compact condominium spaces.

The initiative underscores SMDC Nature’s commitment to building communities that encourage healthier, more intentional lifestyles. As part of the program, residents also received starter kits containing pots, soil, seeds, and a beginner-friendly guide tailored to condo environments, making it easy to start their own small gardens.

The workshops created more than just green spaces—they fostered community connections. Participants shared tips, compared seedlings, and exchanged ideas on maximizing limited condo areas for planting. One homeowner described how the experience changed her perspective on city living: “I always thought gardening was something you needed a yard for,” she said. “But after seeing how easy it is to grow herbs on a balcony, I realized you can create a little garden anywhere—even in the city.”

Participants bring home The Good Grow starter kit, which includes planting essentials designed to help them begin growing herbs and vegetables within their own living spaces.

Jica Sy, Vice President and Head of Design, Innovation, and Strategy at SMDC, emphasized how The Good Grow reflects a growing desire among homeowners to reconnect with nature. “Today’s homeowners are increasingly drawn to spaces that allow them to reconnect with nature, even within an urban setting,” Sy explained. “When residents start growing herbs on their balconies or exchanging harvests with neighbors, sustainability becomes something they experience firsthand.”

Vine Residents learn the basics of planting and nurturing edible plants during The Good Grow workshop, discovering how even small condo spaces can support sustainable, homegrown produce.

Following its launch at Vine Residences, SMDC plans to expand The Good Grow to other SMDC Nature developments, including Field Residences, Grace Residences, and Style Residences, giving more residents the opportunity to incorporate eco-friendly habits into their daily routines.

The program demonstrates that sustainability in urban living does not require large spaces or sweeping changes. It can start simply, with a pot of soil, a handful of seeds, and a willingness to grow—proof that even in the city, residents can cultivate both greenery and community.
