SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) received the “2025 World’s Leading Sustainable Circular Economy” recognition at the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards in Dubai for its “Plate for the Planet” program.
The awards recognize individuals and organizations contributing to sustainable travel and tourism. Submissions were screened by Sustainable Business students at Nova Business School and reviewed by an advisory board.
“Plate for the Planet” expands healthy and environmentally responsible dining options while targeting reduced food waste and greenhouse gas emissions in hotel operations. “Through the program, SMHCC endeavors to halve per capita global food waste at both the consumer and production levels, while greening supply chains and maintaining the food waste per cover, below industry levels as part of our decarbonization plans,” said SMHCC Vice President for Quality and Sustainability Leah Magallanes.
The initiative forms part of the company’s Sustainable Diner Program, under which menu items feature locally sourced and hotel-harvested ingredients. Food waste is processed through composting and the use of biodigesters, with compost utilized in gardens and partner farms. “Compost is then used as fertilizer in our gardens and partner farms, while the harvested herbs, vegetables, and fruits are used by our chefs to prepare a delicious dish–a ‘Plate for the Planet’. As such, we have partnered up with SM Foundation farmers through their Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) program for our composting and gardening efforts,” Magallanes added.
SMHCC said the program supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on responsible consumption and production. The company implements its sustainability initiatives across its properties through designated sustainability officers tasked with monitoring and strengthening environmental practices.
The recognition underscores SMHCC’s efforts to integrate circular economy principles into its hospitality operations.
