Familiarity doesn’t always breed contempt. Oftentimes, the usual and familiar warms the heart and makes us want to relive meaningful and heartfelt memories. It also is a sign that despite the hard knocks, things will eventually fall happily into place.
There’s something immensely healing about revisiting familiar times. As soon as a relic of our earlier days appears, fond memories surge. For us Filipinos, it is the hapag-kainan—the dining room—that holds the most keepsakes. It is here that laughter echoes over shared meals and stories flow around the table. These moments are treasures we want to return to again and again, no matter where life takes us. The dining table shows what is in the heart of the home and is akin to embracing the guests as a forever family.
That’s why hosting a meal is something I hold dear, especially on holidays like New Year. My enthusiasm for designing the table and hanging the decorations is a joyful tradition. As a rule of thumb, I prepare our dinner space before setting up any décor. A room check helps identify any repairs needed to the walls, fixtures, or floorboards. Take some time to wipe the windows, too. This essential step will give us a clean slate to work on and ensure our space remains tip-top shape for many years.
