A greener home with Wilcon’s Eco Selections

With various crises creeping in from all corners, the thought of upgrading and renovating our homes has likely crossed our minds more than once. We want our houses not just to be our refuge from calamities but to save us from them—be it earthquakes, floods, fires, and more. Yet the problem doesn’t end there. While the market offers a wide selection of products, there has been a rise in single-use items that contribute to deteriorating the environment.

These high volumes of disposable materials deplete our resources. They also contribute to exacerbating the active threats. For instance, deforestation from capitalizing on resources can result in floods, while plastic and improperly disposed chemicals may lead to mass fire or poisoning.

This is a concern that Architect James Jao and I know all too well; we had an in-depth discussion about eco-architecture, and I had the privilege of inquiring about tips and guidance for building an eco-friendly home. This aligns with Wilcon’s innovative and environmentally friendly selections.

Our partnership is strengthened by our advocacy for sustainability. His dedication to architecture and eco-housing has led to the development of residential infrastructures. In tandem, Wilcon’s commitment to energy-efficient products aims to assist the ABCDE+ and homeowners’ vision of more sustainable living, thoughtfully designed to suit our local conditions.

An eco-house is designed to alleviate environmental degradation by employing sustainable materials. It draws attention to reducing waste, conserving water, and seeking renewable energy resources. This course is administered to over 50 Wilcon Depot stores that utilize solar panels and sustainable solutions to reduce overconsumption.

As one who’s been in the construction retail industry for years, I have always envisioned a future where sustainability is not simply a choice but a given in an industry where Filipino builders and homeowners thrive. We have to take active steps to save the planet, from minor to drastic shifts. So we collectively seek to operate sustainably in our practice and initiatives, and it has only been advancing from there on.

For thoughtful adjustments, consider installing solar panels to reduce energy costs. Upgrade to energy-efficient appliances, made to conserve water and save energy. These steps help minimize waste without compromising comfort.

With proper consultation from architects and professionals, we can build green architecture that withstands the impacts of calamities and climate change while maintaining aesthetic appeal to our homes. On the topic of products and services, Ar. Jao advises avoiding items with harmful chemicals or substandard materials that compel frequent repurchasing, only to end up in landfills. Not only that, but cheap construction materials can make your home rickety during an earthquake.

Taking steps to transform our homes to be more eco-friendly already contributes to a safer and non-polluted future. With eco-friendly renovations and products available at Wilcon, we can eliminate counterproductive energy consumption while making our home greener.

Eco-friendly Bathroom Renovations

Without fail, Ar. James Jao and I agree that durability must be assessed for renovations, and fixtures should be able to withstand pressure and prevent leaks. That’s why a good shower set that’s easy to clean and suitable for both light and heavy long-term use is ideal. Beyond that, a Snow White polished floor tile design in the bathroom amplifies the brightness and spaciousness of the room. We can also utilize the light using LED bulbs from Alphalux, noted for its energy-efficient choice. A 5W bulb that comes with warm, cool, and daylight settings offers versatile indoor lighting while keeping energy consumption low.

Sustainable Kitchen Solutions

The kitchen is one of the most frequently visited rooms in a Filipino household—it’s where delicious meals are prepared, but it’s also a space where accidents can happen. In an eco-house, kitchen design should prioritize maintenance, installation ease, and energy efficiency.

A great example is the Burner Built-in Gas Hob, which checks all the boxes. Coming from the Eco Series line from Hamden, which offers highly efficient combi boilers that consume minimal power. It includes a built-in safety device that automatically cuts off the gas source in case of emergencies.

The proponent of eco-architecture also recommends an undercounter sink for its easy-to-clean design, contemporary aesthetics, and function. To add a natural and sustainable touch, a granite countertop is an excellent choice for eco-conscious homeowners.

We must also regard the procurement of furnishings and renovations. Ar. Jao pointed out that an eco-house is more than just incorporating the latest sustainable technology into a roof and walls. He suggests sourcing materials within a 600-kilometer radius of the house or project site, which saves gas and effort and reduces the carbon footprint of logistics. With this in mind, we’re glad to share that Wilcon Depot’s more than 100 branches ease this hindrance and lower delivery costs.

The reality that we only have one Earth is what I have most reflected on from architect Jao’s insights. These crises serve as a reminder to care for our one and only planet, Earth. Mother Earth breathes hope into our lives, providing us with the sustenance and shelter we need, so let’s not abuse the remaining resources. If we want to truly build our dream home, admire the breathtaking landscapes, and have a glimpse of a welcoming future, we must all do our part in saving our home planet.
