Beyond Retail: Mitsukoshi BGC celebrates two years of cultural experience

Property Report attended the 2nd anniversary celebration of Mitsukoshi BGC, where tradition met modern retail through a Tanabata Matsuri-themed event. Inspired by the Japanese summer festival of star-crossed lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi, the celebration brought color, culture, and community to the heart of Bonifacio Global City.

Running from July to August, the Tanabata Matsuri features festive décor, weekend activities, and exclusive shopping experiences that reflect the mall’s growing reputation as more than a retail space—it has become a cultural destination that merges Japanese excellence with Filipino hospitality.

A milestone and a vision

The July 18 kickoff began with a Kagami Biraki ceremony—sake barrel breaking to symbolize harmony and new beginnings—followed by the unveiling of Mitsuko, the mall’s beloved Kokeshi doll, now in her Tanabata summer look.

Tetsuo Koike, President, MITSUKOSHI Federal Retail Inc; Thomas Mirasol, Vice Chairman, Federal Land, Inc; Charmaine Bauzon, Commercial Business Group Head, Federal Land Inc.; Dawn Ignacio Head for Off Trade Sales & Marketing, Philippine Wine Merchants; Jodee Arroyo, Deputy General Manager, Sunshine Fort North Bonifacio Retail Development Corporation; Yuki Shimizu, Sales Manager for Southeast Asia, Choya Umeshu Southeast Asia—Ralph’s Wines & Spirits; Yoji Kawaguchi, General Manager, MITSUKOSHI BGC and Yusuke Hirano, Vice Chairman, Federal Land NRE Global Inc.

Federal Land President and COO Thomas Mirasol opened the program with a reflection on the shared journey between Filipino and Japanese partners.

“We celebrate the 2nd anniversary of Mitsukoshi BGC. This occasion is more than just a milestone—it is a moment to reflect on what we have done together and to celebrate the unique partnership between Filipino warmth and Japanese excellence, right here at the heart of BGC,” said Mirasol.

Mitsukoshi BGC sits at the podium of The Seasons Residences, a four-tower Japanese-inspired residential development by Federal Land, Nomura Real Estate, and Isetan Mitsukoshi. The partnership brings together decades of design, engineering, and lifestyle expertise from both countries.

“When we first imagined The Seasons Residences, we saw more than just four towers,” Mirasol added. “We envisioned a place where thoughtful design, everyday functionality, and quiet elegance would come together to create a truly special home. Mitsukoshi BGC is a big part of that vision.”

Two years on, Mitsukoshi BGC continues to grow as a community where culture, commerce, and modern living come together—anchored by a shared vision that celebrates the best of Japan and the Philippines.

Event highlights and activities

Public festivities began on July 19 with a taiko drum performance, followed by the return of the Maguro Cutting Show, where master cutter Iichi Yamashita carved an 80kg bluefin tuna flown in from Japan—always a crowd favorite.

Mallgoers were welcomed into a festive environment filled with:

  • Tanabata lanterns and bamboo tanzaku trees, where guests could hang their handwritten wishes
  • Decorative arches and murals, creating an immersive Japanese-inspired setting
  • Senbonbiki game (weekends until August 17), where shoppers can win prizes with a ₱2,500 receipt
  • Natsu Workshops, offering hands-on activities like:

    • Miniature terrarium building with Moss Escape (August 2–3)
