A dad’s much-needed sanctuary: Designing a man cave for wellness and relaxation

Let’s face it: dads need a break. Between work, family, and everything else, carving out some “me time” can feel impossible.

This is especially important to remember as June is Men’s Mental Health Month, aside from it being the month when we celebrate Father’s Day (this year, it falls on June 15, Sunday).

Men often face unique mental health challenges, sometimes struggling to express their feelings or seek help. The pressure to be the strong, silent type can leave many feeling isolated and overwhelmed.

“I find peace in (this/a) place where I can figure out what needs to be done.” ~ Nico Bantatua, guitarist, Jaggadah

This is where the idea of a man cave—reimagined—comes in. Let’s design a space focused on wellness, relaxation, and providing a safe haven for emotional well-being.

A dedicated space, a sanctuary, can be incredibly beneficial for a man’s mental health.

It doesn’t need to be huge; even a small, well-designed area can make a significant difference.  The key is to create an environment that promotes relaxation and helps him pursue his hobbies and interests, fostering a sense of control and self-care that can be so crucial for mental well-being.

“My messy shop is where I can gather my thoughts, contemplate, and re-evaluate the things and decisions I’ve made. The silence here helps shut the voices in my head so I can focus on the tasks at hand.” ~ Mico Ong, guitar technician, Papi’s Guitar & guitarist, Jaggadah

Setting the mood

The first step is to create a calming atmosphere. Natural light is key. If you can’t rely solely on natural light, make sure you have good lighting options. Instead, opt for softer, warmer lighting like lamps or strategically placed recessed lighting.

“My drum room is a part of my home where I can just sit for hours and reset myself.” ~ Jack Diocson, drummer, Jaggadah

Color plays a huge role, too. Think calming colors like blues, greens, or muted grays. These colors are known to have a relaxing effect. Avoid bright, stimulating colors that might feel overwhelming.

Comfort is crucial. Invest in a comfortable chair or sofa—somewhere you can truly unwind. A good quality recliner or a comfy armchair are excellent choices.

“My attic studio is a haven for gaming and composing music—a secluded retreat where creativity flows freely, untouched by outside judgment. In this quiet sanctuary, time becomes a canvas for artistic expression, allowing me to craft and create without interruption.” ~ Garri Nogoy, vocalist, Jaggadah

Incorporating healthy habits

A man cave shouldn’t just be a place to escape; it should also support healthy habits. If Dad enjoys working out, consider incorporating a small home gym. Even a simple setup with a few dumbbells, a yoga mat, and some resistance bands can make a difference.

“My man cave is my place to de-stress, and at the same time, to be stressed.” ~ Jeruelle Hilario, bassist, Jaggadah

If he’s more into mindfulness, a quiet corner for meditation or yoga could be perfect. A comfortable cushion and some calming music can transform the space into a personal oasis.  This can significantly improve well-being.

“My man cave is like a time machine. It allows me to feel young and dream like a kid, with the soundtrack of my childhood. In a snap, I can go between the present and a space in time filled with ‘what ifs.’ It’s my mental sanctuary.” ~ Dexter Dagotdot, vocals and guitar, Quaderna

Personal touches

This is where Dad’s personality comes into play. Does he love to read? Include a comfortable reading nook with a bookshelf. Is he a music lover? A good sound system is a must. Does he enjoy games? A game table or a dedicated gaming area could be a great addition.

The point is to personalize the space to reflect his interests and hobbies. This will make it feel truly his own, a place where he can feel comfortable and relaxed, reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm.

The men speak

In the process of writing this column, I realized I was in close communication with dads who comprise two bands I manage: Quaderna and Jaggadah. I asked them about their man cave, and how it helps them manage their mental health.
