Solo motherhood, self-care, and space

Happy Mother’s Day to all solo moms (and even dads)!

Solo parenthood is not something I would wish on anyone. Unless one is supported by a group of people with raising a child without a spouse, it is probably the hardest undertaking of a person’s life.

Because you must fulfill the role of two people: from your perspective to the income you bring in, to the amount of energy you can give to your child.

It is such a difficult balancing act that can almost break one’s spirit.

So how do we cultivate a space that allows us to care for ourselves, stay well, and still be a good mother-father?

Interior design and self-care

Interior design plays a vital role in creating a nurturing environment that supports both motherhood and personal well-being.

Creating a calming atmosphere through:

Color palette

Opt for a calming color scheme. Soft blues, greens, and neutrals create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Avoid overly stimulating colors that can increase anxiety.

Consider incorporating natural elements like wood and stone to enhance the sense of calm.

Lighting

Strategic lighting is crucial. Layer lighting with ambient, task, and accent lighting to create different moods.

Soft, warm lighting in the evenings promotes relaxation, while brighter light during the day enhances energy and productivity.

Natural light is also essential; maximize it whenever possible.

Decluttering and organization

A cluttered space reflects a cluttered mind. Decluttering and organizing your home can significantly reduce stress and improve mental clarity.

Invest in storage solutions that keep things tidy and easily accessible.

A clean, organized space promotes a sense of calm and control.

Sensory elements

Engage multiple senses to create a relaxing environment.

Soft textures like plush rugs and comfortable throws add tactile comfort.

Aromatherapy diffusers with calming scents like lavender or chamomile can promote relaxation.

Soft, calming music can create a peaceful ambiance.

Dedicated self-care spaces

It is typical of mothers to put themselves last, often forgetting to allot space at home for their well-being.

But as my friend Kate delos Reyes put it, “Well parents parent well.”

So take care of yourself by designing:

Your relaxing corner

Designate a specific area for relaxation and self-care.

This could be a cozy reading nook, a meditation corner, or a small space for yoga or stretching.

Make it inviting with comfortable furniture, soft lighting, and calming décor.

An organized kitchen

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, and a well-designed kitchen can significantly reduce stress.

Make sure it is functional and organized with easy-to-reach storage and efficient workspaces.

This makes meal preparation less of a chore and more enjoyable.

A multifunctional space

Solo mothers often need to maximize space.

Consider multifunctional furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as a sofa bed or a coffee table with storage.

Incorporate personal touches that bring joy and inspiration. Display artwork, photographs, or other items that hold personal meaning.

This creates a space that reflects your personality and fosters a sense of self.

For solo parents, the home is more than just a dwelling. It is a sanctuary, a hub for family life, and a critical space for self-care.

By thoughtfully designing our living spaces, solo mothers can create a home that supports our well-being and enhances our ability to manage the demands of motherhood.

In it, we can be productive. In it, we can relax, recharge, and thrive. In it, we can raise good human beings.
