No FOMO: Holy Week at home could be that much-needed rest

I remember the Holy Week of my childhood: we would always go home to Pampanga (where my mom is from), or I would take a vacation at my Ate Belen’s home in Apalit, famous for the reenactment of Jesus’ crucifixion (watched it once, as a kid).

Holy Week in the Philippines is also traditionally a time for family trips and pilgrimages. But not all of us — this writer included — have this choice or luxury to take that dream trip or to take time away from our homes, for various reasons.

This could be a different kind of pilgrimage: a journey inward, a staycation filled with peace, reflection, and even fun. We can flip the narrative — we’re not stuck at home; we are blessed to have a home and time to rest, recover, and reflect mentally, emotionally, spiritually.

Embrace the quiet

Holy Week is, at its core, a time for spiritual reflection.

We can take advantage of the quiet time at home to reconnect with our faith. We can read religious texts, meditate, or simply spend time in quiet contemplation. Light candles, play calming music, and create a peaceful atmosphere for prayer and introspection.

This is a perfect opportunity to delve deeper into the meaning of the season, away from the usual hustle and bustle. This is especially beneficial for those spending Holy Week alone, allowing for focused introspection and personal growth.

Find peace and purpose alone

For those of us spending Holy Week away from family, this time can be an opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth.

Embrace the solitude and engage in activities that nurture our soul, like:

  • Digital detox: Disconnect from social media and the constant influx of information. Use this time to focus on ourselves and our inner peace.
  • Creative exploration: Try that new activity you’ve been wanting to try for the longest time. Do the hobbies you usually don’t have time for. Write, paint, learn a new language, or relax with a good book.
  • Mindfulness and meditation: Practice mindfulness techniques to cultivate inner peace and reduce stress. There are many guided meditations available online.
  • Acts of kindness: Reach out to friends and family virtually, or perform small acts of kindness for yourself or your community. Offer this up to God as our way of following Jesus’ path.
  • Self-reflection journaling: Take time to reflect on our life, goals, and aspirations. Journaling can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and personal growth. (Visit joyfulwellness.ph to learn more.)

Family or solo fun

Whether home with family or by ourselves, the key is to engage in activities that bring us joy.

We can

  • Cook a special meal: Prepare a favorite dish or try a new recipe.  Enjoy the process and each other’s company (if alone, savor the fruit of your work).
  • Have a movie marathon: Curl up on the couch with a comforting movie or TV series. There are so many movies about the Bible on Netflix, and also feel-good movies to lift your mood.
  • Connect: Staying at home doesn’t mean we do not reach out to others, unless we decide to make it a silent retreat, which is perfectly okay.

Self-care and pampering

These days at home are also a good time to prioritize self-care. Give yourself a home spa treatment — a relaxing bath, a face mask, or a manicure.

Read a good book, listen to your favorite music, or simply unwind and recharge. Taking care of ourselves is essential, especially during times of stress or uncertainty.

This is particularly important for those spending Holy Week alone, as self-care can combat feelings of loneliness or isolation. It can also prepare us to return to work or school after Easter Sunday.

Embrace the unexpected

Sometimes, the best things in life are the simplest.

Appreciate the small joys and glimmers — a warm cup of coffee in the slow morning you had always wanted to have, and the beauty of a sunrise.

Find gratitude in the silence and small moments, and let them fill your heart with peace and contentment.

This Holy Week, let’s choose to see the silver lining. Let’s make it a week filled with joy, peace, and meaningful memories, regardless of our circumstances.
