Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates champions sustainable industrial development with its Sustainability Hub at LIMA Estate

As the infrastructure arm of the Aboitiz Group, Aboitiz InfraCapital is committed to enabling businesses and uplifting communities. One of its key business units, Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates, continues to champion this purpose by driving innovative and responsible solutions—most recently through the launch of its Sustainability Hub at LIMA Estate in Batangas.

“The Sustainability Hub reflects our dedication to responsible waste management and circular economy principles. Through collaboration with our estate community and stakeholders, we aim to minimize environmental impact and contribute to the long-term sustainability of our region,” said Clifford Academia, Vice President for Operations of Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates.

Sustainability practices at LIMA Estate

LIMA Estate’s Sustainability Hub is a testament to Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates’ commitment to responsible waste management and circular economy practices—from graywater recycling and composting to converting plastic waste into eco-products. The facility is designed to minimize environmental impact while maximizing resource recovery.

The Hub consolidates a range of environmental efforts that promote sustainable practices such as water conservation, ecological restoration, and solid waste management. It has a storage capacity of 3.3 m³. The Greywater Recycling Facility repurposes treated wastewater from LIMA Water Corporation’s sewage treatment plant for non-potable uses such as plant irrigation. Complementing this is the Plant Nursery, which cultivates various species that enhance LIMA Estate’s biodiversity and landscaping. As of its 2024 expansion, the nursery can accommodate around 15,000 propagates daily and produces 18 species of groundcovers, shrubs, and palm trees.

The Plant Nursery within the Sustainability Hub cultivates diverse plant species that enhance the estate’s biodiversity, support ecological restoration, and enrich LIMA’s green spaces.

“As we all know, industrial parks are vital drivers of economic growth. However, in the process of manufacturing large quantities of raw materials, organizations within the development also generate substantial waste. Managing this waste responsibly while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations remains a challenge. Recognizing this, Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates has taken proactive steps to embed sustainability into our core operations.

This initiative represents our ongoing efforts to turn waste challenges into opportunities—ensuring that valuable resources are recovered, reused, and repurposed. Through collaboration with our estate stakeholders, we aim to minimize environmental impact and contribute to the long-term sustainability of our region. This initiative not only supports our locators in meeting environmental standards, but also fosters collective responsibility in resource management. By providing innovative solutions and encouraging sustainable practices, we hope to set the benchmark for other industrial developments to follow,” said Nido Villaflores, Senior Manager for Estate Operations.

Plastic waste is transformed into eco-bricks, eco-pavers, and eco-casts at the Eco Materials Facility—demonstrating how LIMA Estate integrates circular economy practices into day-to-day operations.

Central to the Hub is the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), which ensures proper waste segregation and processing. The MRF manages four types of waste: food, plastic, residual, and hazardous. Adjacent to it is the Composting Facility, which can convert up to one ton of food waste into 100 kilograms of nutrient-rich compost in just 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the Eco Materials Facility transforms plastic waste into eco-bricks, eco-pavers, and eco-casts—demonstrating how circular economy solutions can be scaled across industrial estates. The facility has a daily capacity to produce 500 eco-bricks, 500 eco-casts, and 1,000 eco-pavers.

A call for collaboration

In her speech during the launch, Jennifer Umali, LIMA Estate Horticulturist and Property Manager, emphasized that the Sustainability Hub is more than just a facility—it’s a symbol of collaboration and innovation in action.

“It’s where we address the pressing issue of waste management through practical, scalable solutions. To further support these efforts, we’ve implemented waste management one-on-one sessions with our host barangays, promoting awareness and responsible waste practices. Across the estate, we are also deploying green bins made from eco-boards to encourage proper segregation. Looking ahead, we’re exploring a waste-to-rewards initiative that would incentivize responsible waste disposal and active participation in our sustainability programs. But creating a sustainable system requires more than infrastructure—it demands a shared commitment. That’s why we continue to introduce initiatives that engage our community in responsible waste management.”

In line with its commitment to uplift host communities, Aboitiz InfraCapital Economic Estates has begun extending the benefits of its initiatives to neighboring barangays. Brgy. Bagong Pook received 420 kg of compost to nourish its community garden, while Brgy. Luta Sur was provided with 507 eco-bricks and 53 eco-casts to support local development projects.

Further recognizing the importance of collaboration, the company honored key partners for their contributions. Aice Philippines Ice Cream Inc., Bandai Namco Philippines Inc., and Sansyu Precision Lipa, Inc. were acknowledged at the launch for their consistent plastic waste donations. Ipponyari was recognized as the top contributor of vegetable scraps for vermicomposting, while Flavors and Wingbites at The Outlets @ LIMA Estate were commended for their food waste contributions.

To promote sustainability across the broader estate community, the company also conducts Waste Management 101 sessions to equip stakeholders with practical knowledge on responsible disposal practices. Green bins made from recycled plastic are strategically placed throughout the estate to encourage proper waste segregation. A Waste-to-Rewards program is also in development to incentivize eco-friendly behaviors among locators and partners.

The event concluded with a short planting activity and a guided tour of the Sustainability Hub. LIMA Estate’s Senior Manager for Estate Operations, Roman Escobido, led the tour, giving guests a firsthand look at how the estate translates its sustainability goals into actionable, day-to-day initiatives that benefit both businesses and surrounding communities. The Hub offers a glimpse into the future of sustainable industrial development in the Philippines—where collaboration is key to achieving true sustainability.
