Seaside serenity: The positive impacts of beachside living on our health and well-being

“The waves of the sea help me get back to me.” ~ Jill Davis

I watched the movie adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ “Message in a Bottle” in 1999 with someone—an org mate—who will always be my crush (fearless 40-something women, say hi!).

The fact that the main characters—Garrett Blake (Kevin Costner) and Theresa Osborne (Robin Wright)—lived near the Outer Banks sea stuck with me. It is a core memory.

I have always wondered what it would be like to live on the beach and not just visit for two or three days, as a tourist. Not to party, but to actually find peace and thrive.

How would the sea change me?

Living near the ocean offers a wealth of benefits for physical and mental health, contributing to a greater sense of overall well-being. The environment fosters a lifestyle conducive to improved health outcomes.

It impacts everything in us—mind, body, and spirit.

Stress reduction and well-being

The rhythmic sound of crashing waves is naturally calming, acting as a soothing balm for the mind. Studies have shown a correlation between proximity to the ocean and reduced stress levels, anxiety, and depression.

The vastness of the ocean and the horizon it presents can offer a sense of perspective and tranquility, allowing for mental rejuvenation and improved emotional regulation. We realize we are a mere speck of dust: we don’t need to stress about small things.

Simply gazing at the ocean has been linked to decreased cortisol (the stress hormone) levels.

There’s also the chance to take walks on the beach every day (imagine that!), to meditate, or to simply be. Wow, what can beat that feeling?

Movement and the fresh sea air

Beachside living also provides lots of opportunities for physical activity. Swimming, surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and simply walking along the beach are all excellent forms of exercise.

This increased physical activity contributes to improved cardiovascular health, weight management, and stronger muscles and bones.

The fresh sea air—often cleaner than inland air—can do wonders to our lungs and overall respiratory health.

The abundance of seafood available in coastal areas means daily healthy servings of omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for brain health, heart health, and reducing inflammation.

Sunlight exposure promotes vitamin D production, crucial for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. (Don’t forget to use a reef-safe sunblock, though.)

Enhanced social life and a cool community

Coastal communities often foster a strong sense of community. In 2012, I took my family to El Nido, Palawan. Instead of staying in a hotel, we stayed with a fisherman and his family.

We saw how they relaxed after a long day that starts really early. The hearty dinners that would often end with them heading to a disco nearby to dance the night away. Nakakatuwa.

Shared experiences like beach walks, local events, and water-based activities create opportunities for social interaction and connection, combating feelings of loneliness and isolation.

And social interaction contributes to a stronger sense of belonging and overall well-being. It even impacts how long you may live and could therefore be life-saving.

Sleep quality and nature’s therapy

I would do a meditation with my friend Camille Escudero where the voice over is accompanied by ocean sounds. I envision giving the sea whatever is stressing me out or causing me mental, emotional, or physical pain.

I would end up falling asleep during meditation, and would wake up refreshed early the next morning.

Beachside, I can imagine how the calming sounds of the ocean and the fresh sea air can contribute to improved sleep quality. The natural rhythm and gentle sounds paired with the cooler nighttime temperatures should create a more conducive environment for restful sleep, leading to improved energy levels and cognitive function throughout the day.

The ocean offers a powerful connection with nature. Spending time outdoors, whether on the beach, in the water, or simply observing marine life, reduces stress, improves mood, and increases feelings of happiness and contentment.

Now how about a life like this every single day?
