The unsung architect of cozy: How scent shapes loving homes

Whenever I smell tuyo, I go back to being a child in my Lola Aurora’s kitchen in Angeles, Pampanga.

I see her back turned to me sitting at the dining table as she cooks the breakfast she had made for the family for years.

The smell of tuyo, eggs, and her signature crispy fried rice fills the air.

And then I open my eyes to the present. The scent of tuyo does this each and every time, and I love it. It brings me back to a moment spent with Lola.

This is how scent and love are connected.

I’m sure you have a similar thing with scent that brings you back to a core memory, or that helps your brain identify you are in a safe space.

The silent architect

The impact of scent on our emotions is deeply rooted in our biology. Our olfactory system, responsible for our sense of smell, is directly linked to the limbic system, the part of our brain that governs emotions and memories.

This explains why a certain smell can instantly transport us back to a cherished moment or evoke a powerful feeling.

Studies have shown that specific scents can influence mood, reducing stress and anxiety while promoting feelings of relaxation and well-being.

For instance, research published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that lavender aromatherapy significantly reduced anxiety levels in patients undergoing medical procedures.

The power of scent isn’t just anecdotal; it’s scientifically proven.

Scent’s emotional impact

How can we harness this power to cultivate loving and comforting spaces within our homes?

The answer lies in carefully selecting scents that evoke positive emotions.

Scent’s behavorial impact

Research consistently demonstrates scent’s influence on mood and behavior.

Studies have shown that specific scents can significantly impact various emotional states:

Stress reduction: Lavender, as mentioned earlier, is widely studied for its anxiolytic properties.

A meta-analysis of several studies published in the Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal concluded that aromatherapy using lavender essential oil effectively reduces anxiety levels in diverse populations.

Mood enhancement: Citrus scents, particularly lemon and orange, are frequently associated with increased alertness, improved mood, and reduced feelings of fatigue.

This effect is likely due to the stimulating properties of their volatile compounds, which can influence neurotransmitter activity and affect brain regions associated with reward and pleasure.

Improved sleep quality: Certain scents, like lavender and chamomile, promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

These scents influence the production and regulation of melatonin, a crucial hormone for sleep-wake cycles.

Studies have shown that exposure to these scents can lead to increased melatonin levels and improved sleep parameters.

By thoughtfully selecting fragrances that evoke positive emotions and incorporating them into your living space, you can transform your home into a true sanctuary, a place where love, comfort, and well-being flourish.
