Explore Colors in Small Spaces

People like to color their world. But what if their world is smaller than 30 square meters?

This is the challenge that a lot of condominium dwellers face these days. Most of the time, the less-than-30-square-meter space includes all living areas, dining, comfort rooms, and the bedroom. Because of the pandemic, this modest space now also includes even their workstation due to work-from-home arrangements.

But don’t fret. There is a way to make all these requirements of your life fit into that limited space. Interior designer Johanna Guevarra believes that colors can spruce up small spaces to invoke desired moods and functions.

Back to basics is always a safe mantra. Color has the power to impact your mood and articulate unspoken messages. Guevarra believes that “color is a powerful communication tool. It can be used to signal action, influence mood, and physiological reactions.” She suggests painting colors that can achieve a calm and unwinding atmosphere. Typically, she notes, cool colors allow the dweller to feel light and airy. Warmer colors, on the other hand, give a feel of coziness but may even give the space a tighter vibe.

Yet, in the same breath, Guevarra espouses some adventure and boldness in utilizing color. It all depends on the priorities of the dweller. If the dweller prefers the feeling of tranquility and calm and wants to unwind in a room, Guevarra says color choices could be “soft blues, like powder blue, pale aqua, or muted greens with gray undertones like sage, olive, or mint green.” She adds that blues are also known for their calming and serene effect. A touch of green would also evoke a feel of nature being brought indoors.

Guevarra admits that many would still lean toward traditional and neutral colors such as beige and white to achieve the feel of calmness. But she says there are a slew of other colors that can infuse the relaxing vibe in the room. You need not be part of the BTS Army to experiment with splashing shades of lavenders, lilacs, or soft pinks, Guevarra notes. “You could use these colors as an accent. Or you could use it in a portion of your wall,” she adds.

Another consideration is your environment or where your condo or apartment is located. An urban condo can benefit from lighter greens, blues, and browns. A condo near a body of water could be enhanced with natural wood shades. She also says that the play on color need not be limited to the walls. She encourages experimenting with color “whether it be on your accessories, furnishings, or something like that. But if you don’t like plain beige, there are also some neutrals that aren’t the typical beige. There are soft taupe, light grays, or greige,” Guevarra emphasizes.

Guevarra also shares another tip, “You could also complement colors with your furniture. But make sure that your chosen paint color will complement the décor. That harmony will create a soothing effect because the type of color you want is different. But if it doesn’t match your furniture, instead of being soothed, you’ll be stressed.”

We all know that stress is definitely something we want to purge from our lives. Guevarra urges everyone to have the courage to experiment with color with the right advice from experts. Color and space can work well in making living spaces not only tolerable but thoroughly enjoyable.
