Celebrating a year of Car-Free Sundays at Ayala Avenue

A year ago, Makati’s bustling Ayala Avenue embraced a transformative vision—reimagining one of the country’s busiest thoroughfares into a car-free, vibrant community hub. This September, the city celebrates the first anniversary of Car-Free Sundays, an initiative that has since inspired similar ventures in Cebu Business Park, Manila, and Quezon City.

Launched in September 2023, Car-Free Sundays immediately captured the imagination of the public. From its inaugural day, which drew an impressive 12,000 attendees, participation has nearly doubled over the past year, with approximately 19,000 individuals joining each week. The event has evolved into a cherished ritual for many, promoting active lifestyles and fostering a strong sense of community among residents of Makati and Metro Manila.

From seasoned athletes preparing for marathons to families enjoying a leisurely Sunday stroll, Car-Free Sundays attracts a diverse crowd. Friends gather to bond, pet owners walk their companions, and fitness enthusiasts find a unique space to train—transforming Ayala Avenue into a sanctuary for wellness and social engagement.

A collaborative effort between Ayala Land, the Makati Commercial Estate Association (MACEA), and the Makati local government, the initiative enjoys strong support from both local businesses and global fitness brands. These partnerships have helped enhance the event’s appeal, contributing to the vibrant energy that now fills Ayala Avenue every Sunday.

Beyond personal health benefits, the event has sparked economic growth for local establishments. Weekend foot traffic has revitalized business for nearby cafés, restaurants, and shops, further enriching the urban landscape. What began as an effort to promote health and wellness has now blossomed into a celebration of Makati’s lively, forward-thinking spirit.

On September 15, the community will come together to mark this significant milestone with a special anniversary celebration. From 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., attendees can look forward to exciting activities, exclusive prizes, and the chance to meet prominent personalities from the world of sports and fitness. Whether you’re an avid athlete or simply seeking to enjoy a fun morning with friends and family, the event promises something for everyone.

As Car-Free Sundays enters its second year, it continues to serve as an inspiring example of how urban spaces can be transformed to benefit both the environment and the community. The initiative fosters an inclusive, healthy atmosphere that brings people together—a testament to the power of active movement and shared spaces.
