PIID breathes new life into St. Ignatius Church

Intramuros, with its storied past, has long been a symbol of the Philippines’ rich heritage. Now, through the visionary efforts of the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID), a significant piece of this history has been reimagined, offering a fresh chapter to the city’s narrative. The once-forgotten ruins of St. Ignatius Church have been transformed into a vibrant tourism center, demonstrating the power of design to resurrect history and repurpose it for modern-day use.

The PIID legacy

Established to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in the interior design industry, The Philippine Institute of Interior Designers is committed to advancing the practice of interior design in the Philippines. Partnership and vision

The latest endeavor, a strategic partnership with the Intramuros Administration and supported by the advocacy of First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, underscores the organization’s commitment to creating spaces that honor the past while serving the needs of the present. The vision is to transform the space into a visitor’s center that will be the first touchpoint of visitors that houses a museum and key amenities, celebrating Intramuros’ storied past while offering a vibrant space for both locals and tourists.

Planning and execution

The challenge of reviving the dilapidated St. Ignatius Church was not without its hurdles. Initial discussions lacked clear direction, casting doubt on the project’s feasibility. However, driven by their passion and technical expertise, the PIID team persevered. Their research-based approach and collaborative efforts with key stakeholders resulted in a plan that transformed uncertainty into achievement.

The transformation

In just 60 days, what once stood as a neglected structure has become the Centro de Turismo Intramuros—a modern museum that seamlessly integrates with the historic remnants of the old church. This transformation serves as a compelling reminder of how interior design can breathe new life into public spaces, turning overlooked relics into cultural landmarks.

More than just a museum, Centro de Turismo Intramuros is a symbol of resilience and innovation. It stands as a testament to the talent and dedication of Filipino interior designers, showcasing their ability to create spaces that not only inspire and educate but also connect people with their heritage. Through this project, PIID continues to shape the future of interior design in the Philippines, reinforcing the importance of ethical practices and the promotion of Filipino values in every project they undertake.
