A year ago, I posed this question: What’s not to love about the Philippines? This was the time when the Department of Tourism (DOT) launched the #LoveThePhilippines campaign, replacing the long-standing “It’s More Fun in the Philippines!” campaign. The fresh branding aimed to showcase the country as a cultural and historical treasure trove, emphasizing its unique appeal to travelers worldwide.
It seems that the new branding for the Philippines, which initially received negative feedback from netizens, is working. By the end of 2023, the country warmly received some 5.4 million international visitors, surpassing the DOT’s initial target of 4.8 million arrivals for the entire year. Notably, this figure was twice the count recorded in 2022.
Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC) has just celebrated its 15th anniversary.
A green company that started by developing properties in Cagayan de Oro City and Santo Tomas in Batangas, we have recently unveiled new projects that aim to support tourism in areas that showcase the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Philippines.
I’m delighted to announce that IDC Prime, Italpinas’ subsidiary, is making strategic investments in Puerto Princesa City—the gateway to Palawan. This captivating destination has once again garnered global acclaim, securing the third spot in the ‘Best Islands in Asia-Pacific’ category at the Luxury Awards 2024 by Travel + Leisure Asia. Notably, it shares this prestigious podium with Thailand’s Koh Samui (top spot) and Bali, Indonesia (second place).
We have recently entered into a joint venture agreement with landowners Edwin C. Fabro and Calvin Ryan O. Coherco to develop a Green Residential and Resort Community in Puerto Princesa, with an estimated project cost of P2.81 billion. This undertaking is a testament to the confidence we have in Palawan’s growing potential as an investment hub and a sustainable tourism destination.
The upcoming project will cater to tourists, residents, and investors seeking a sanctuary in harmony with nature. The property spans 20,000 sqm, over half of which is designed to be dedicated to verdant landscapes and sparkling pools. Envisioned as a residential resort, it is planned to feature eight mid-rise green buildings, featuring cutting edge architectural designs and embodying the principles of biophilia.
Inspired by Italian design, the Palawan venture integrates passive green features with resort amenities, creating a sustainable paradise. Other IDC projects have been co-branded with top-tier international hospitality management, i.e. the Ascott group, which partnered with us in both Cagayan de Oro and in Batangas. Our venture in Palawan may also be similarly branded with an international chain, and this is definitely a space to be watched.
Italpinas’ strategic investments in Palawan underscore our commitment to sustainable development and anchored on our belief in the Philippines’ potential as a top-tier tourist destination.
The ongoing success of the #LoveThePhilippines campaign is expected to maintain its momentum, captivating global interest in the country’s cultural and natural gems. Looking ahead, the DOT has set an ambitious goal of attracting at least 7.7 million foreign tourists this year—building upon the remarkable achievement of 5.4 million international tourist arrivals last year. Italpinas is happy to play a modest role in fostering tourism growth within the country. Our investments are anticipated to create a ripple effect, positively impacting the local economy by generating employment opportunities and supporting community development.
