The Westin Manila earns Green Globe certification

The Westin Manila has received its first Green Globe certification, a recognition of the hotel’s commitment to sustainable management and operations.

Situated in the heart of Ortigas and within easy reach of Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the five-star property blends luxury hospitality with forward-looking green initiatives. Guests are welcomed into a wellness-focused environment where even pets are part of the experience.

“We are all very proud to achieve our first Green Globe certification. The certification is the formal recognition for our efforts to improve sustainability. We will not stop here but continue to develop more initiatives and ideas to conserve energy and resources,” said general manager Alexander Dietzsch.

Managing resources responsibly

Opened in 2023, the hotel follows a comprehensive sustainability management plan guided by a dedicated Green Team with representatives from every department. Energy efficiency is a central focus, with LED and compact fluorescent lighting in corridors and public areas, and motion sensors installed in stairwells. Charging stations for electric vehicles encourage both guests and staff to adopt cleaner transportation.

In 2024, water conservation measures were further strengthened with the installation of low-flow aerators in guest bathrooms and adjusted cistern water levels to reduce consumption. Waste management also plays a critical role, with recycling, composting, and green procurement policies minimizing the amount of waste sent to landfills. The Westin Manila also collaborates with Chop Value to upcycle used bamboo chopsticks into buffet stands, food displays, and homewares.

Sustainability on the plate

Culinary offerings highlight environmentally responsible sourcing and reduction of food waste. Under Marriott International’s Serve 360 sustainability program, the hotel launched its One Dish Wonders buffet station, where curated selections are prepared a la minute and served in tasting portions to avoid excess production.

Its Green Mondays initiative also strengthens ties with local farmers, chefs, and entrepreneurs who champion plant-based cooking and sustainable ingredients, aligning global standards with community-driven practices.

Reforestation and community impact

Beyond hotel operations, The Westin Manila has partnered with the HARIBON Foundation through the Forests for Life program. Running from July to September, the initiative allows guests and partners to contribute to reforestation across the country, with a Php488 donation funding one seedling and its care for three years.

The property’s social initiatives also extend to education and child welfare. Employees participate annually in the Road to Give charity event, locally known as the Kolor Run in Clark, Pampanga, which benefits Save the Children Philippines. They also volunteer for Brigada Eskwela, repainting classrooms and collecting supplies to help schools prepare for the academic year.

The hotel has likewise invested in mentoring the next generation of culinary professionals. Through its Mentor-Mentee Culinary Showcase, interns undergo intensive training with hotel chefs and later stage a seven-course degustation dinner, with proceeds donated to Save the Children Foundation.
