The Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX), a project operated by Metro Pacific Tollways South, is set to redefine transportation in Southern Luzon with its transformative approach to mobility, tourism, and environmental sustainability. Recognized for its dual contributions, CALAX has garnered accolades from the Cavite Tourism Excellence Awards and the Green Awards by the Sta. Rosa City Government.
Paving the way for mobility
Spanning 45 kilometers, CALAX links the Manila-Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX) in Kawit, Cavite, to the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) at the Mamplasan Interchange in Biñan, Laguna. Once fully operational in the third quarter of 2025, CALAX is expected to cut travel time between these key points from two hours to just 35 minutes. The expressway also aims to decongest heavily trafficked roads like Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway, and Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Road.
“Our responsibility extends beyond mobility—it’s about creating a gateway to new opportunities and a better future for the communities we serve,” said Arlette V. Capistrano, Vice President for Communication and Stakeholder Management of MPT South.
Part of Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation’s (MPTC) domestic portfolio, CALAX joins other key toll roads like CAVITEX, NLEX, SCTEX, and CCLEX in redefining transportation in the Philippines. By championing sustainability, tourism, and regional development, CALAX is setting a benchmark for infrastructure projects that serve both people and the planet
Driving economic growth through tourism
CALAX’s innovative Biyaheng South tourism advocacy program and its Cavite Tourism Passport initiative have enhanced regional tourism. The passport-like booklet allows travelers to collect stamps from various partner tourist spots and establishments in Cavite, encouraging exploration of the province’s cultural landmarks and hidden gems. This initiative boosts local economies and promotes Cavite as a prime tourist destination.
The program’s success earned CALAX a plaque of appreciation at the Cavite Tourism Excellence Awards, underscoring its significant role in fostering regional tourism and economic growth.
Sustainability at its Core
As the “green expressway,” CALAX is designed to integrate renewable energy and eco-friendly features, such as solar lighting and tree-lined roads. These efforts not only enhance the driving experience but also reduce the expressway’s carbon footprint.
CALAX’s environmental initiatives, including tree planting drives, the Linis Barangay campaign, and participation in the annual International Coastal Cleanup, earned it recognition as a Sustainable Development Partner at the Green Awards by the Sta. Rosa City Government.
Looking ahead
When completed in 2025, CALAX is expected to serve over 340,000 motorists daily, significantly up from the current 259,815 users. This underscores its growing importance as a vital infrastructure project for Southern Luzon, enhancing connectivity, reducing travel times, and stimulating economic opportunities.
As CALAX continues its journey toward completion, it is poised to become a vital artery for Southern Luzon, ensuring a future of seamless connectivity, vibrant tourism, and sustainable growth.
