Honoring 60 years of interior design’s impact on Filipino spaces and lives

The Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID) marked its 60th anniversary with a vibrant celebration at the breathtaking Centro de Turismo Intramuros on October 5, 2024. The air was filled with joy as generations of creatives gathered to honor the institute’s rich history and contributions to the field of interior design. The energy and excitement were palpable, and it was a momentous occasion that brought together interior designers, industry partners, and supporters.

The choice of venue, the beautifully revitalized Centro de Turismo, added an extra layer of significance to the event. PIID’s month-long efforts to transform the historic space into a stunning venue left guests in awe. The intricate work put into improving the site showcased the true artistry and skill of the organization, and the setting felt like an extension of the celebration itself—highlighting how design can elevate spaces and experiences.

In an interview with Property Report, National Vice President IDr. Cynthia Marie Fernandez-Beltran reflected on PIID’s achievements and the organization’s aspirations. She shared, “We’re celebrating our 60th anniversary here at the Centro de Turismo Intramuros. It’s actually a hallmark project of the board, and it’s the very first project that we’ve ever had with the government. We want to reinstate the role of interior designers in society and in nation building. Interior design has relevance in society, and our profession is something that really uplifts people, improves their way of living, and actually contributes to culture and society. Part of our advocacy is to create that kind of awareness about our interior design.”

The milestone event was not only a reflection of past triumphs but also a forward-looking tribute to the future of the industry. With the youngest board of trustees in the organization’s history, PIID is poised to lead the next wave of design innovation. Carla Mae Leonor, PIID’s Director for Public Relations, emphasized this in her conversation with Property Report, “The 60th anniversary is really a celebration of all the milestones that the Philippine Institute of Interior Design has achieved over the past 60 years. We want to celebrate all of the partnerships that we’ve established; all of the collaborators that have helped us get where we are now, and all the past board members who have also spearheaded a lot of initiatives that drove the industry to where it is now.”

Leonor also touched on PIID’s vision for the future, saying, “For the 60th year, we also wanted to showcase how the next sixty years will be. We’re charting a new path, opening up a new chapter in our journey with the current board of trustees, which is now the youngest in history. This kind of [young] mindset, and innovativeness is deeply embedded in our DNA. We’re very excited to push forward all the initiatives of PIID – whether it’s building the competitiveness of our members, or it’s encouraging, also, partnership with government – all of these things that will allow us to shape the future of Philippine design.”

The event was a true celebration of the past, present, and future, with a joyous atmosphere that resonated through generations of designers present. It was a night that honored milestones and embraced the endless possibilities ahead, a testament to PIID’s enduring impact on interior design in the Philippines.
