Safeguarding the environment for a sustainable future

I was recently invited to be a panelist at the 7th Hospitality Philippines Conference 2024, which was organized by the Hospitality Asia Event Series at Mariott Manila in Pasay City.

Let me take this opportunity to thank the organizer for the invitation and to congratulate them as well as everyone who took part in the successful two-day event that gathered over 500 delegates and 80 esteemed speakers from across the Philippine hospitality and tourism industry.

This year, they brought together a diverse array of professionals—from hotel chains to government entities, and from real estate firms to eco-tourism advocates. Attendees included academic institutions, branding agencies, consultants, lawyers, technology providers, and many more, each bringing their unique expertise to the table.

Indeed, #HPC2024 proved once more to be the most comprehensive annual event for networking, knowledge exchange, and innovative discussions.

I was assigned as one of the Subject Matter Experts (SME) in the segment “Hotel Design Summit Philippines (#HDSP): Exploring Cutting-Edge Design and Sustainable Solutions in Hotel Architecture and Interiors” where I highlighted Italpinas Development Corporation’s (IDC) experience and best practices.

Our segment’s theme, “Designing for Sustainability: Innovations in Architecture and Hospitality,” could not have been better tailored to IDC’s experience, as I shared insights into the company’s journey in having integrated sustainability in all our projects from the very start.

As some of you may already know, our company is known for its commitment to environmentally conscious designs. We have been a pioneer in creating structures that not only stand out aesthetically but also promote ecological, social, and financial balance.

During the panel discussion, I delved into the intricacies of designing for sustainability, highlighting how IDC and its subsidiaries’ approach goes beyond mere compliance with green standards. The focus was on innovation—how new materials, technologies, and design philosophies are shaping the future of hospitality infrastructure.

Speaking of infrastructure, we all agreed that to further boost tourism and be more competitive, the government should continue to invest in modernizing transportation networks, enhancing digital connectivity, and promoting sustainable practices. This includes upgrading airports and seaports, improving public transportation, and ensuring reliable internet access in tourist areas. Additionally, fostering partnerships with private sectors to develop and build a massive infrastructure network and eco-friendly accommodations and attractions can significantly enhance the overall tourist experience and sustainability of the industry.

After all, the government’s #LoveThePhilippines campaign continues to thrive. Since the campaign was launched in 2022, it has consistently drawn global attention to the country’s rich cultural and natural treasures. This year, the Department of Tourism (DOT) aims to attract at least 7.7 million foreign tourists, building on last year’s impressive milestone of 5.4 million international arrivals.

Through our subsidiary, IDC Prime, we have initiated a collaboration with the international hospitality management company, the Ascott Group. This partnership extends to our projects in Cagayan de Oro (Primavera City’s 4th phase, named “Citta Alta”) and Batangas (the first of two towers comprising Phase 2 of Miramonti Green Residences in Sto Tomas).

Looking ahead, our future projects, such as Baia Verde Green Estate in Bataan, Firenze in CDO, The Moena Mountain Estate Residences in Bukidnon, and an upcoming project called “Riviera” in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, may also be branded with an international chain. All our projects showcase cutting-edge green architectural designs and embody the principles of biophilia. Baia Verde, Moena, and Riviera will be sustainable residential development communities with first-class, resort-style amenities.

Sustainable design and infrastructure development are not merely trends but essential for the future of the hospitality and tourism industry in the Philippines. At #HPC2024, we concluded that by integrating innovative materials and technologies and fostering public-private partnerships, we can create a truly resilient and competitive tourism sector.

Our green development projects at IDC Prime, located in emerging cities and destinations, aim to enhance the tourist experience while preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of our country.

With continued government support and collaborative efforts, the hospitality sector can be a powerful partner in ensuring that the Philippines will become a top destination for sustainable tourism, attracting millions of visitors while safeguarding our environment for future generations.
