A year of wellness and sustainability with car-free Sundays at Ayala Avenue

In the heart of Makati’s bustling Central Business District, Ayala Avenue has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once filled with the constant hum of traffic, this iconic thoroughfare has become a car-free oasis every Sunday, welcoming thousands of people seeking active movement and community connection.

Launched in September 2023, the Car-Free Sundays initiative, the first of its kind in the Philippines, has not only captured the imagination of the local community but has also set a standard for similar programs nationwide. As the event marked its first anniversary on September 15, over 21,000 participants took to the streets, embodying the initiative’s goal of promoting a healthy and sustainable urban lifestyle.

Inspiring community participation

Hosted by triathlete and environmental advocate Paolo Abrera, the celebration kicked off with an inspiring message from Chrissy Roa, Ayala Land’s Corporate and Estates Marketing and Communications Group Head. “The Car-Free Sundays is for everyone. It represents different groups, and diverse sets of people, so it’s not just for the hardcore athletes, it’s for everyone. Whatever stage of fitness or wellness you are in, you’re all welcome here,” Roa shared.

The event has drawn participants from all walks of life—from fitness enthusiasts training for marathons to families enjoying leisurely strolls. Friends come together for bonding moments, while pet owners and their furry companions delight in the newfound freedom to explore the urban landscape. This inclusive atmosphere has fostered a sense of camaraderie, making the Car-Free Sundays more than just an event—it’s a community gathering.

A celebration of wellness

The anniversary event was graced by Olympic pole vaulter EJ Obiena, who expressed his appreciation for Ayala Land’s initiative. “Have space, enjoy life, really be active, and stay healthy because that way, you can be the best version of yourself. I’m happy that Ayala Land is doing this, and I’m honored to be part of it,” he said. Obiena joined Hans Lopez-Vito, Ayala Land’s Brand Experience and Brand Strategy for Corporate, Estates and Residential Head, to officially signal the start of the day’s activities.

Throughout Ayala Triangle Gardens, participants enjoyed a range of pocket activities that made the day even more dynamic. From Jump Manila’s rope workouts and Movement in Play’s yoga sessions to Nike Run Club’s shoe trials and the Samsung Galaxy Run Club’s threshold workouts, there was something for everyone. Pet lovers also flocked to the Puppy Playcare Center’s obstacle course, while young cyclists enjoyed a push bike race organized by the National Bicycle Organization.

A legacy of transformation

The Car-Free Sundays initiative is a collaborative effort between Ayala Land, the Makati Commercial Estate Association (MACEA), and the local government of Makati, all aiming to promote sustainable urban living. What started in 2023 with 12,000 participants has since grown to attract around 19,000 attendees weekly, transforming Ayala Avenue into a hub for wellness, active living, and community engagement.

Ayala Land’s vision for creating greener, more connected spaces has inspired other cities to follow suit, with similar programs emerging in Manila, Quezon City, and Cebu. As more areas embrace this car-free movement, Ayala Land’s commitment to environmental sustainability and enhancing the quality of urban life continues to leave a lasting impact.

Building towards a sustainable future

Ayala Land, the country’s leading real estate developer, has always prioritized sustainability and well-being in its developments. The success of Car-Free Sundays is a testament to the company’s dedication to creating spaces that not only encourage movement but also foster social interaction and a sense of belonging.

With this initiative, Ayala Land continues to set a precedent for urban sustainability, inspiring other cities to adopt more livable and active environments. As the company moves forward, it remains committed to creating communities that are healthier, more sustainable, and more connected.
