Nestled at the heart of the island of Mactan in Cebu, Valencia is a five-hectare expanse where a commercial center and a multi-tower residential development will soon rise.
In the years to come, around the merry yuletide season, this pocket estate will transform into a festive holiday haven inspired by its namesake city in Spain. Valencia will play host to many holiday feasts in the near future.
Experience the Warmth of Valencian Christmas
Because of its southern location on the Mediterranean Sea, the city of Valencia in Spain has one of the warmest and gentlest winters in Europe. Snowfalls are so rare with the most recent occasion happening way back in 1960. With an average temperature of around 17 °C, December, January, and February are considered to be the coldest months in Valencia.
As the holiday season approaches, the city comes alive as lights and holiday decorations veil every corner, bringing festive cheer to both locals and tourists.
The people also prepare to celebrate centuries-old traditions—many of which are also observed in the Philippines because of our colonial history.
A staple Christmas tradition that the people of Valencia religiously observe is the Nativity Scene, which we fondly call belen in the Philippines. The Nativity Scene is a tableau that features the birth of Jesus Christ. The origins of this tradition can be traced back to Saint Francis of Assisi who created the very first nativity scene in Italy to bring back the emphasis of Christmas to the faithful worship of the people to Christ. Nativity scenes can be found strewn all over the city—from the people’s houses, plazas, malls, churches, and other public places.
It is also customary for the people of Valencia to gather with their families for a Christmas Eve dinner, the counterpart of our own noche buena here in the Philippines. Instead of the traditional jamon and quezo de bola which we usually feast on, their typical Christmas Eve spread would include a stew, seafood, polvorones, marzipan,
a traditional Christmas cookie that originated from Andalusia, and traditional Spanish turrones.
These are just a few of Valencia’s holiday customs that the denizens of Valencia in Mactan Island are bound to savor and enjoy. Witness amazing Christmases unfold in this prime development of Vista Land in the island of Mactan. Envision a barrage of Christmas adornments covering every nook of this pocket estate, with sparkling lights draping the façade of the commercial center’s edifice, and a bedazzled Christmas tree that would thrill kids from one to ninety two. Imagine sharing a hearty banquet with your friends and family at the estate’s wide selection of gastronomic concepts, or have a warm, cup of hot cocoa at a quaint café. At Valencia, there are a myriad ways to spend the holiday season with the people who are nearest and dearest to you.
Valencia, Where City and Tropical Island Living Collide
Serving as a suitable backdrop for amazing Valencian-themed Christmases, Valencia is strategically located in Lapu-lapu City. The city is bounded on the north by the main island of Cebu, to the west by Cebu City and Mactan Channel, on the east by the Camotes Sea, and on the south by the town of Cordova.
Lapu-lapu is linked to Mandaue on mainland Cebu by the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge and Marcelo Fernan Bridges, and through Cordova, by the newly opened Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway. The Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the second busiest airport in the Philippines, is also located nearby.
One side of Lapu-lapu City consists of prime beach resorts which attract domestic and foreign tourists all year round. The other side of the city that faces Cebu has no sandy shores but is home to a number of oil companies, ship builders, industrial complexes, and other various industries under the Mactan Economic Zone. It is anticipated that more industrial endeavors will flock to the city because of the convenience it offers for investors.
Today, Lapu-lapu City is mostly known for being a tourist haven due to the presence of several historic spots, and its pristine sandy shores and white beaches, located primarily in the coastal barangays of Marigondon, Agus, Suba-basbas, Maribago, Mactan, and Punta Engaño. Because of this, the city has become a weekend destination of the people of Metro Cebu and other nearby towns.
