Bannering the theme, “Tatag at Tapat”, to reflect the Philippine Construction Industry Roadmap 2020-2030, the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA) and the American Concrete Institute Philippines Chapter recently held the first-ever Philippine Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards.
The awardees will all compete at the 2021 American Concrete Institute’s Excellence in Construction Awards in the US next month.
Among them are Infinity House by Carlo CaIma Consultancy (Low-Rise Building category), SM 4 ECOM Center by EEI Corp. (Mid-Rise Building), ATG Towers 2 by the Makati Development Corp. (High-Rise Building), Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 by Megawide Construction Corp. (Infrastructure), Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange also by Megawide (Decorative Concrete), and Wilcon Builders Depot by J Vazco Inc. (Horizontal Construction).
The Parish of the Holy Sacrifice Chapel at the University of the Philippines by DMCI Project Developers won in the Repair and Restoration category and was announced as the first-ever overall winner of the Philippine Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards.
“The awards highlights and celebrates Philippine excellence as we build a better tomorrow and be global partners in building nations. These are the aspirations of the 10-year industry roadmap the association is enabling,” PCA Foundation program director Anthony Mariano said.
“The amazing details brought me to realize that we can really compete globally, no if and no buts, even the pandemic cannot hinder us to excel,” PCA president Wilfredo Decena added.
Philippine Construction Industry Roadmap 2020-2030
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) partnered with PCA and launched the 10-year roadmap in 2019. Construction is considered as one of the most important sectors in the country’s economy as it employs 10 percent of the workforce.
“Infrastructure remains to be the best driver of economic growth because it has the best multiplier effects in terms of employment and shared prosperity,” Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez said.
The construction industry had grown an average of 10 percent in the last five years, but was also badly hit by the pandemic. Thus, PCA participated in the National Employment Recovery Strategy Sectoral Consultation and Pre- Summit Dialogue organized by the DTI and the Department of Labor and Employment.
In the Pre-Summit Dialogue held last month, PCA executive director Barry Paulino highlighted the need for digitalization and a 30-year infrastructure master development plan.
Recommendations included the demotion of the entry of foreign firms and workers, posing that that liberalization of the construction market is counter-productive to the Recovery Strategy.
